Memory Improvement: Improves Your Brainpower, Improves Your Quality of Life

By Alison Benjamin

It's an unpleasant sensation, that sinking feeling you get when you know you've forgotten something important and can't think what it might be. Then you come home and are greeted with a smiling 'Happy Anniversary!', or find you forgotten you have somewhere else to be - your child's school event, a paper to be submitted, a client to meet, etc.
With missing another important event with family, work, or friends, you realize it has got to stop. It's time to work on memory improvement before you ruin both your career and personal life. There are a number of training techniques that any average person can do to achieve great improvement in memory skills.
You can separate the things you need to remember into categories. You'll need slightly different memory improvement methods for each category. There are dates and events, faces and names, then facts and lists.
Take forgetting names and faces, for instance. It's one of the most common problems for many individuals. If you are introduced to a person whose name you need to remember, try repeating the name frequently in the conversation. "Hi Walter, nice to meet you." "So, Walter do you think..." "What's that on your plate, Walter?" This helps file the name in short term memory.
Now you have to ingrain both the name and the face in long term memory. Some people use contextual imagery to remember names and faces, like associating a their names with features about them that stand out. A guy named Walter who happens to have a bulbous nose could become Walrus Walter in your memory. As you might have noticed, Walrus Walter, or Walter the walrus, is easy to remember. it rhymes, for one thing. This is a memory improvement technique that is effective and can be useful for remembering which client, or which in-law, or which acquaintance is which.
When it comes to lists, there's a trick you can use for the improvement of your memory that is common. It's the acronym game. For example, you've learned in school how to remember the Great Lakes: HOMES. For the lakes Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. If you're doing a grocery list with lollipops, bread, cake, apples, and kale. Take the first letters and think of a way you can remember it better, like BLACK. Of course, writing the items down would be easier, but done this way, it's a good memory improvement exercise.
There are other memory improvement exercises that you can do, like when you have to remember a long series of numbers, like phone numbers, your social security number, a PIN number, try to break them down in more manageable bites.
The improvement of your memory is an ongoing process, so do these regularly. Learn how to manage and file information better in your mind with these memory improvement techniques, keep them up, and your life, as well as your memorization skills, will improve for the better... Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/6628880
